The Federal Government of Nigeria search for an indigenous candidate to occupy the position of Rector for the just completed high institution, the Bonny Polytechnic College is over. The Rector will serve as the Chief Academic Officer of the Institution for term of four years and subsequently be renewed on another equal term if the performance of the candidate is found to be above board. The Federal Government had asked that the Bonny people field its candidate alongside other candidates in the Federation. A wing of the Bonny elite both at home and abroad clamored to field a “home-boy” with an impeccable academic and work related-pedigree to fill-up this likely hot and keenly contested position. Nomination plan from this tiny oil-rich local government area ended in the pipeline, never saw the light of the day. The NUC meeting at Abuja chaired by Dr. Modupe Adeniran who just came back from abroad after studying how new academic systems are established and maintained in growing economy was key to the selection. A radio program, the View Point in Rivers State relayed an announcement from the Supervising Minister for Education, Barrister Nyesom Wike, that a UNIPORT Professor from Okrika has been appointed the Rector for the Federal Polytechnic, Bonny Island. The broad-hearted people of the ancient Bonny Kingdom has accepted the decision of the Federal Government and are hopeful that the Rivers Professor will equally see to the advancement of education in the area and in the country at large.
