The best way to ensure your water is free from potentially harmful elements and safe for drinking is to use a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system. Currently SAXUM invests in this system.
The most widely used disinfectants for drinking water are chlorine and chlorine-type disinfectants. However there are lots of criticisms today in the continued used of chlorine and chlorine-type disinfectants due to its numerous disadvantages and hazards. These hazards include safety and health related risks and effects that can only be avoided by phasing out the use of chlorine and applying disinfectant(s) with completely different characteristics.
Osmosis is a natural process involving two liquids with different solute concentrations which are separated by a semi-permeable membrane with a tendency for the liquid to move from region of low concentration to a higher one in order to obtain chemical potential equilibrium. As the name implies, in reverse osmosis, the process is the reversal of the osmotic process, that is, the process forces the concentration to flow from a region of high solute concentration through a semi-permeable membrane to a region of low solute concentration by applying a pressure in excess of the osmotic pressure. The membrane only allows very small molecules (such as H2O) to pass through it, effectively removing up to 99% of most water impurities. Liming material is used to adjust pH between 6.8 and 8.1 to meet the potable water specifications, primarily for effective disinfection and for corrosion control. Re-mineralization may be needed to replace minerals removed from the water by desalination. This can be a costly process though. Adding liquid ionic minerals, such a trace minerals ionic tonic to reverse osmosis drinking water can also be a good idea. Acidic water can be a down side of this process if not properly controlled. SAXUM is committed to excellence, and safety in all of its product offerings and will certainly deliver on its words.
Besides clean and safe drinking water, additional benefits of a Reverse Osmosis System include:
i. Algae growth requires 3 things: nitrate, phosphate, and light. If your tap water contains either nitrate or phosphate, or both, chances are your aquarium will develop algae problems. By using purified water like one from reverse osmosis, for your regular water changes, you will reduce these levels in the aquarium.
ii. Plants grow best in water with specific pH levels. Mineral water can come as natural or customized depending on the desired usage. The pH of tap water is difficult to control quite unlike purified reverse osmosis water. By using purified water, you can customize your water with one of the many available buffers to easily maintain the optimal pH level your plants require.
iii. Having a reverse osmosis system, one saves the headache of unstable water conditions and hours of extra maintenance in your aquarium tanks, kitchen sinks, effective in removing a variety of unhealthy contaminants from water, and thereby providing you with clean and safe drinking water.
